Procedure to Apply for an Ordinary Passport:
Types of Passport Applications, To apply for a new passport, follow the steps below:
- Normal Passport
- Tatkal (Urgent) Passport
Step 1: Check Online Passport User Registration Process
- Visit the official passport website Passport Seva .
- Register and create an account to generate a User ID and Password.
- After submitting the from, they got a confirmation emaill from their registered email id and activate your account
Step 2: Check Passport Filling Procedure
- Log in with the credentials and apply for:
- New Passport
- Tatkal Passport
- Renewal Passport
- Fill in personal details, current and permanent address, family details, and required passport details.
- Upload necessary documents and pay the Applicable Passport Fee online.
- Choose the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) for an appointment.
- Download and print the appointment confirmation letter.
Step 3: Document Verification at Passport Seva Kendra
- Visit the PSK/POPSK on the scheduled date and time.
- Carry original documents along with photocopies and the appointment confirmation letter.
- The officer at PSK will:
- Capture biometric details (fingerprints and live photo).
- Verify documents.
- After verification, a receipt will be provided.
- If applying for renewal, the old passport will be cancelled (a stamp and small hole will be marked on it).
- The application is then sent to the Regional Passport Office (RPO) for police verification.
Step 4: Police Verification Process
- The passport request is forwarded to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
- The Local Intelligence Unit (LIU)/Police Station conducts an address verification.
- The LIU officer submits a report to the RPO:
- If positive, the passport printing process begins.
- If negative, the passport issuance is halted until the applicant visits the RPO to clarify the issue. A second round of police verification is then conducted.
- Police verification usually takes about a week.
Step 5: Passport Printing & Delivery
- Indian passports are printed at the Indian Security Press in Nashik.
- Once verification is complete, the passport is printed and sent for a final check at the RPO.
- The Indian Postal Service delivers the passport to the applicant's registered address.
- The applicant (or their parents/spouse) can collect the passport by showing ID proof.
- The passport status can be tracked online via the passport portal or Speed Post tracking.
- If the applicant cannot be contacted, the passport is returned to the RPO, and the applicant must visit the office to provide correct details for redelivery.
Step 6: Processing Time for Passport Issuance:
- Normal Passport – Issued within 15 to 30 days.
- Tatkal (Urgent) Passport – Issued within 10 to 15 days.
